Apple iPhone SE2 Review – Best mid range smartphone 2020 – iPhone SE2 benchmark, camera, unboxing

iPhone SE2 review

Apple announced the second-generation iPhone SE2 on April 15, and started selling it on the 24th. It is a motivated work that cuts less than 400 dollars including tax for lower models. We think it is the best mid range smartphone of 2020.

The first generation iPhone SE was sold in 2016. The feature is the panel of 4 type. Just like the image of the iPhone of the past, it was 58.6 × 123.8 × 7.6 mm (width × depth × height) / 113 grams, light and easy to operate with one hand, it was a model with many persistent fans. Currently, I have 3GS, 4S, 5, 5s left (all works), and when I touch it for a long time, it is certainly surprisingly small and light compared to recent smartphones.

In 2017, the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus will be announced, but there will be no SE follow-on model and the route will be expensive / large. This is an evolution that can be taken for granted when considering the visibility and battery capacity when compared to competing models.

After that, as in 2018 and 2019, every year, articles such as” “Is the SE model announced?!?” Were posted on various sites, and although it was exciting every time, only X series types did not come out (There is no home button type), and it was rumored to be the same again this year in 2020.

Personally, I thought, If it is a 4-inch model, the battery capacity is severe, so there is no SE subsequent model. However, it is a 4.7-inch model with a size / weight of 67.3 × 138.4 × 7.3mm (same) / 148g. It will be a follow-on model to the iPhone 8 rather than a follow-on to the SE. In that sense, my expectation is half correct and half wrong. However, in terms of content, it is a surprisingly heaped appearance. The main specifications are as follows.

iPhone SE2 unboxing

SoC is A13 Bionic. Equipped with 2 high-performance cores, 4 high-efficiency cores, and Neural Engine. It’s the same as the iPhone 11 (Pro / Pro Max). Therefore, the operating speed and performance can be roughly imagined only with this. Memory is 3GB, which is really small. There are three types of storage, 64GB / 128GB / 256GB. OS is iOS 13. IOS 13.4.1 was released shortly after shipment.

The display is 4.7 type IPS type 1,334 x 750 pixels / 326ppi. It is compatible with P3, which has a wider color gamut than sRGB. It’s not a narrow frame, but it’s better if you have a border to this extent because you don’t cover the screen with your hand.

The network is 2×2 MIMO compatible 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5, NFC (FeliCa compatible). Supporting Wi-Fi 6 and FeliCa in this price range has an impact. SIM is dual, but only nano-SIM is physically present. The other is eSIM. This eSIM support also has a high point. I would like you to refer to the table for compatible bands, but of course there are no weak points.

The interface is a Lightning connector and stereo speakers. Unfortunately the 3.5mm jack is not installed. Sensors are Touch ID fingerprint authentication sensor, barometer, 3-axis gyro, accelerometer, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor. Location information is built-in GPS / GNSS, digital compass, iBeacon microlocation.

The camera has 12 million pixels (f / 1.8) on the back, optical image stabilization, portrait mode, and LED True Tone flash. Front 7 million pixels (f / 2.2), automatic image stabilization, portrait mode. In both portrait modes, there is no camera for distance measurement, AI is used, and it is possible only when a face (person) is detected. Although this is inferior to the upper model, there are few scenes other than people who want to use portrait mode, so there will be no problem in particular.

The splash-proof / water-proof / dust-proof performance is IP67 rating for a maximum depth of 1 meter and a maximum of 30 minutes. Battery life is up to 13 hours for video playback, up to 8 hours for video playback (streaming), and up to 40 hours for audio playback. In addition to charging from the Lightning connector, wireless charging (Qi) is also supported.

There are three color variations: black, white and (PRODUCT) RED. The size is about 67.3 × 138.4 × 7.3 mm (width × depth × height), and the weight is about 148 g. EarPods with Lightning Connector is included, and the tax-excluded price is 500/550/600 dollars according to storage capacity.

Comparison with the old iPhone. From the left 3GS, 4S, 5s, 2nd generation SE … 1st generation SE is almost the same size as 5s
The case is made of aluminum, which is the same grade as the one used in the aerospace industry, and high-durability glass. The price is middle range, but the luxury is sufficient. I had a smartphone of this size for a long time, but it fits in the palm of my hand. The measured weight is 148 g, which is heavier than the first-generation SE, but still lightweight. However, it turns out that it is still big compared to the old iPhone.

iPhone SE2 gaming performance

On the front is the front camera / microphone / speaker above the panel, and the Touch ID fingerprint authentication sensor / home button below. The rear is a camera and LED True Tone flash on the upper left. Mute button and volume ± button on the left side. Lightning connector / microphone / speaker on the bottom side. Power button and SIM slot are located on the right side. Since one is eSIM, there is only one physical SIM slot.

Accessories are AC adapter (5V1A, weight 25g), USB / Lightning cable, EarPods with Lightning Connector, eject pin. The eject pin has changed from a flat type to a pin type. Is it due to cost reduction? If you use an optional 18W or higher adapter, you can charge up to 50% in 30 minutes.

The 4.7-inch IPS display is 1,334 x 750 pixels, which is close to 326ppi and 350ppi, so it’s a level where you don’t mind jaggies of characters. Sufficient color development, contrast, brightness, and viewing angle. Especially when the brightness is maximized, it is dazzling, and the color is only P3, so it is very vivid. Compared to OLED, it has no blackness, but it is enough if you can see it on LCD.

I wonder if you have a little fever. I got a lot of heat when I registered PIN / fingerprint, Apple ID, Wallet, etc. continuously by default. On the contrary, the benchmark test, shooting, and continuous video playback via Wi-Fi were not so.

The sound is a stereo speaker when it is in the horizontal position, and power is annoying at maximum. The sound is good, and in addition, the missing vocals are cleared. However, it feels like the left and right balance is a little closer to the home button. Since there is no earphone output, I used a genuine Lightning connector / 3.5mm adapter and watched it with the SONY MDR-EX800ST. It has a low center of gravity, and the power is of course good. After all, I reconfirmed that the sound output of the iPhone / iPad is good and there is a sense of security.

The camera has 12 million pixels (f / 1.8) on the back, the number of output pixels is 3,024 x 4,032 dots, the focal length is 4 mm (35 mm equivalent 28 mm), digital 5x zoom (pinch in / out, left and right sliders), optical image stabilization, LED True Tone flash. The front is 7MP pixels (f / 2.2), the number of output pixels is 2,320 x 3,088 pixels, the focal length is 3mm (35mm equivalent 32mm), and automatic image stabilization.

Both have a single lens and Neural Engine portrait mode, and depth control by AI. Face recognition is only for humans. It does not support dogs and cats. After shooting, you can change the depth and light source by editing the photo app, and you can finish it naturally as you can see from the screen capture of the edit. This point is a part that cannot be imitated by iPhone 8 without Neural Engine even with the same single lens.

For photos / edits, in addition to filters, tilt / rotation, and adjustments, automatic, exposure, brilliance, highlight, shadow, contrast, brightness, black point, saturation, natural saturation, warmth, tint, sharpness, You can finely adjust the definition, noise reduction, vignette, and so on.

Although the number of smartphones equipped with three or more lenses is increasing these days, the single lens is cleaner in terms of design. Personally I think it’s up to 2 (+ super wide angle) …
Modes are time-lapse, slow, video, photo, portrait and panorama. There is no manual for photos, there is no manual, it is simple that there is flash and ON / OFF of Live Photos in the status bar, and exposure compensation beside the AF area.

Settings are in Settings / Camera. Grid, scan QR code, video shooting (720p HD / 30fps, 1080p HD / 30fps, 1080p HD / 60fps, 4K / 24fps, 4K / 30fps, 4K / 60fps), slow motion shooting (1080p HD / 120fps, 1080p HD / 240fps), stereo audio recording, format (high efficiency, compatibility priority), smart HDR.

The operation of the camera itself is very smooth. I don’t feel any stress. The image is very iPhone-like, with no exaggeration and looks natural. I personally feel unsatisfactory just because I use a flashy P20 Pro, but this is generally the case. It’s a shame that there’s no night view mode or super wide angle (although the night view can be taken as it is), but it’s probably not used frequently, so you can enjoy it even with a single lens.

iPhone SE2 vs iPhone 8

I have posted 34 examples, so please refer to it. However, since it’s time, it’s around my home. In the portrait mode, I can’t help calling the model child just for this reason, so I listened to the time when she passed Shibuya in another case and took a picture in a few minutes near the station (model: Akane Ai ) .

In addition, the photos posted are cut out from Live Photos to 1-frame JPEG from Live Photos with photo application / editing (it happened to be turned on), and since other items are saved in HEIC, JPEG using iMazing HEIC Converter Converted to (Exif information is maintained). Please understand this in advance.

In portrait mode, the light source / studio lighting creates a shadow on the skin (usually the case using a reflector). Also, it is saved as JPEG instead of HEIC. In addition to the natural bokeh, the border line with the bokeh is processed without any discomfort, which is what I call Neural Engine.

You can shoot this much by pressing the shutter without thinking about difficult things, so it will be enough for everyday use.

At initial startup, the home screen is 2 screens. Swipe from top to bottom for notification panel, bottom to top for control panel. The other screen on the left is a widget. Of course, this area has the same operability as an iPhone with a home button. There is an absolute sense of security compared to Android smartphones whose UI changes depending on the manufacturer or model. The 3D Touch-specific menu was unified into the long-press menu in iOS 13.

About 14.1GB of storage is in use. The OS has been updated immediately after shipping and is adapted to iOS 13.4.1, and trials are also performed in this state. It doesn’t seem to need any explanation, including Touch ID and mobile communication related (eSIM), but since it supports FeliCa, Suica can be added to the wallet.

The apps are phone, Safari, message, and music in the Dock. FaceTime, Calendar, Photo, Camera, Mail, Clock, Map, Weather, Reminder, Memo, Stock Price, Book, App Store, Podcast, TV, Healthcare, Home, Wallet, Settings. On the second screen, File, Search, Shortcut, iTunes Store, Tips, Contacts, Watch, Apple Store, Clips, GarageBand, Keynote , Numbers, Pages, iMovie, iTunes U. Voice memo, Compass, Measurement, Calculator in the utility folder. Just like any other iPhone.

Benchmark test is simple, but I used Geekbench 5 and Google Octane 2.0. Geekbench is Single-Core 1,324, Multi-Core 2,587, Compute 6,336. Google Octane 2.0 is 48,154. For reference, if it is the iPad Pro 11 one generation ago (2018 model, equipped with A12X Bionic), Geekbench has Single-Core 1,113, Multi-Core 4,689, Compute 9,197. Google Octane 2.0 is 42,846. Except for Multi-Core and Compute, it feels a little complicated that the iPhone SE is superior.

iPhone SE2 benchmark

The company also has an interesting page that allows you to compare the second-generation iPhone SE with the iPhone SE and 6-8 Plus. If you are interested, please check it out as well.

In the battery benchmark test, when full-screen continuous playback of full HD video was performed via Wi-Fi with 50% brightness / volume, the power turned off in about 6 hours. It’s shorter than the smartphones of other companies that I recently evaluated, so I was worried and I measured twice, but the result was the same. The case is small, and the battery capacity cannot be increased (same as iPhone 8). However, the brightness / volume of 50% is quite dazzling and annoying. It seems to have quite a lot in general usage.

Last but not least, the main conditions for smartphones that I use are FeliCa compatible, portrait mode (can be used in wide angle), and stereo speakers must. Super wide angle / telephoto, night view mode, 3.5mm jack, I’m glad I had … The authentication can be a face or a fingerprint. The quality of the panel, the quality of the picture, and the design / texture of the housing are important, but this is at a level that isn’t currently high-end.

With that in mind, this iPhone SE is all true. Moreover, if it is a lower model, tax will be less than 400 dollars. Ultra high performance as you can see from the benchmark test. If you draw the price, performance, AI, camera, etc. on the radar chart, it will be a large chart without irregularities. I’m curious about the next-generation iPhone, but I thought, If I don’t need the high-end, this is fine !?

On the other hand, there are few models with Android-based SIM lock-free smartphones that meet the above conditions, and since the market share of iPhones in Japan is particularly large, the difference seems to widen.

As described above, the Apple iPhone SE is an iPhone with a 4.7-inch liquid crystal display and A13 Bionic. As you can see from the introduction, the looks are closer to the 8th successor than the second-generation SE. However, SoC, camera, Wi-Fi 6, P3, eSIM, FeliCa, etc. are spared, all the current parts are poured, and the lower model is 400 dollars even if tax included. It is a tremendous cost performance machine.

I want an iPhone, but it’s expensive, and it’s an Android-equipped device at a high price. As a result, people who are not iPhone and users who like iPhone (especially owning up to 8) want all smartphone users to try it out.
